Hipnotech - October 23rd in Toronto

Business as Usual proudly presents our inaugural bash: Hipnotech, October 23rd

Featuring:

Rosanna McGuire [Business as Usual | www.cleoflaptra.com]

Rosanna returns to Sounthern Ontario after spending 2 years studying and performing in San Francisco. There, she studied with a who's who of bellydance: Suhaila and Jamila Salimpour, FCBD, Jill Parker, Zoe Jakes, Rachel Brice, Mira Betz, Cera Byer, and Amy Sigil. In California, Rosanna also had the opportunity to expand her movement repertoir outside of bellydance, into vinyasa yoga, breakdance, house, and locking. She is known for her unique interpretation of tribal fusion, incorporating elements of vintage jazz dances as well as hip-hop, while referencing traditional styles of Middle Eastern dance. Rosanna continually strives to dance outside of her own box, and fully admits to having dance ADD.

Musical support from:

JD Mack [Business as Usual | Opulent Temple]

Opulent Temple heavy hitter JD Mack (aka Nick McAlister) steps in with his blend of bass heavy dancefloor stompers - everywhere from slamming breaks to slamming techno (see a pattern developing here?). Having played around the world from Bondi Beach to Burning Man (along side DJ Dan, Christopher Lawrence, and Carl Cox to name a few), JD is once again getting ready to unleash the best on Toronto's unsuspecting victims.

G Cue [Raw Soul]

Gerard Valdez, aka G Cue, has been playing his own brand of chunky, funky house in Toronto and surroundings for years and is a major threat on the decks. He is cofounder of Raw Soul and a regular at underground house jams put on by Nine, Boogie Inc., and Bounce. Gerard has been djing for 16 years of his life, learning and being inspired by Toronto locals as well as visiting stars like Mark Farina and Derrick Carter. Gerard has also played Harvest Festival, Promise Cherry Beach parties, Circa, and Footwork, to name just a few of his musical appearances and milestones.

Doors 830pm, First set at 930, Second set at 1030pm. Bring your dancing shoes.

$10.60 advance ($10 + paypal fee), $15 at the door if available, $5 after the bellydance performance (around 11:30). $10 virtual tickets available for me in person or by snail mail. I will not be issuing ANY paper tickets. You will receive email confirmation and just provide your name at the door. Tickets available at www.cleoflaptra.com

Held at Labspace Studio in the east end.
2A Pape Ave. at Eastern Ave.
Accessible by either the Queen Streetcar (24 hour), or by 72 Pape from Pape or Union Stations (runs 5am-1am on Saturdays)

Spaces are also still available in Rosanna's first weekend workshop intensive. This is an extremely rare, first time, maybe never again opportunity to study with one of Canada's most creative and technical tribal fusion dancers. For more details, please visit www.cleoflaptra.com

Friday October 23rd (Aurora Live Studios, 392 Queen Street E)
12-2pm: Yoga and fast technique.
Following a vinyasa warmup, we're going to drill drill drill. We'll be working on improving quality and speed of hip and upper body movements and adding footwork. Multiple level options will be given. Bring a towl and be prepared to sweat.

230-430: Technique contin. and flexibility training
More sweating. We will take advantage of our supple, warm muscles to safely and effectively increase our flexibility. We will be discussing techniques and practices specifically for helping those of us who were not born flexible!! Do you stretch and stretch but don't see any improvement? This is for you.

Saturday October 24th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
1230-230: Fusion, movement invention, and creating choreography
We will be doing a combination of discussion and exercises on fusing dance styles, expanding your movement vocabulary, and creating solo choreography. Participants should bring "ideas in progress" for fusion, movements, and choreographies and be open to group discussion. This workshop is geared for dancers who either want to start performing solo, who want to improve their current solo choreographic work, and also for those who want to break out of using only a specific set of movements.

3-5: Flapper fusion
My dance-baby: a combination of vintage jazz dance and bellydance, completely fabricated from my own imagination. I will be teaching this style as an example of the principles discussed in the earlier workshop. Don't know what on earth this could be? See my video from Tribal Fest 2008:
www.youtube.com/watch

Sunday October 25th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
12-2: Funk styles for bellydancers - Funkifying your bellydance and bellydancifying your funk.
We will be going over how to utilize bellydance technique to create illusory effects in popping, contracting different muscle groups to create a hit, breaking down boogaloo rolls in bellydance terminology, and flipping arm waves inside and out. I will also be discussing different dance styles that are commonly performed with popping, and the distinction between popping and locking.
www.youtube.com/watch

230-430: Slow technique and flexibility.
This technique section will focus on drilling SLOOOOOOOWWWWWLLLLLLYYYY. We will also be doing yoga and other excercises to work on balance. We will end with more stretches (expanding on what we did on Friday).

430-5: Questions and wrap up

Cost
$240 before Oct 16
$45 per half day

Send registration via paypal (fees included in cost above) to blueberrysouffle@hotmail.com Registration will shortly be available via my website. For snail mail registration, contact me for a mailing address. You can also register in person at my classes or events. Class size is limited so register early to guarantee a spot. No refunds, but it is partially or fully transferable (ie. another dancer can take your Friday workshops if you can't make it).

We take music and dance into the streets for the purposes of healing and peace. If you have a year or more of bellydance experience and want to dance with intention please email me at puredc@gmail.com. If you have experience playing the doumbek, djembe, or frame drum, I'd love to hear from you too. PURE is a great way to meet great people, dance for good causes, and gain performance experience. Please email me at puredc@gmail.com if you have questions or are interested in joining, or send me a message.

2009 Walk for Autism

I hope you don't mind me bringing this to your attention as it is a little off topic but it's something that greatly impacts a lot of people, even dancers. This October 31st there's a lot going on with Halloween and dark belly shows but there's also the 2009 Walk Now for Autism that's being held at the National Mall in DC. I can't go to this because both of my sons are autistic and they need their mommy home while Daddy is at school/work. I meet many other Belly Dancing moms who have children with Autism. We have the same stories, the same frustrations, the same cause to fight for.

But its not just immediate family members who should be concerned about this. So far the official count is 1 out of every 150 children born in America are on the Autism spectrum. The CDC considers this to be an alarming epidemic. If you intend to have children one day there is a 1 in 150 chance that your child will be born onto the Autism Spectrum and you will be exactly where I am and so many other Moms and Dads are right now. We're not looking for a cure because it isn't a disease. What we want is better education and adult programs for children in school and adults with Autism going into the workforce.

What I want to do is just ask you to go to Autism Speaks and learn a little bit about what Autism is and how you can learn to interact with autistic kids and adults. And if you want to take that a little bit further and look into donating to Autism Speaks or participating in the Walk for Autism on the 31st then that would be really great. Please help me, please help us all. Represent for the Bellydancing Friends & Family of Autistic Kids and Adults who can't be there. Thank you.

2009 Walk Now for Autism,

Hello from the DC Tribal Board...We're back, baby!

DCTribal is still here! We have been heartbroken by the loss of Kaihea, who among others has helped build the strong tribal bellydance community we have here in the DC area. Kaihea was an amazing woman, a dear friend, and we want to continue pursuing her vision of building a community of dance and arts.

After taking some time to heal and recover we are proud to announce that we have a new focus and direction for this year and beyond. Instead of bringing “big name” instructors and producing large concert shows as we have in the past, DCTribal will be planning more community-related events aimed at building friendships and connections between dancers and enthusiasts of all experience levels in our area. Such events include the DCTribal student show and regularly scheduled hafla (party) gatherings. We believe that we no longer have to sponsor master instructors because you, the dancers and performers that comprise our extended dance and arts family, have successfully assumed this important community role.

In the coming year, we look forward to building the DC tribal bellydance and arts community through regular town hall meetings so that you, our fellow dancers and artists, can become personally involved in and aware of events and happenings in the area, as well as holding seasonal haflas (parties) to bring people together to congregate, dance, socialize and build camaraderie. We also look forward to involving more of you in the guidance and work of DCTribal, with its current board of directors--Na’la, Asharah, Mavi, Mab, and Belladonna--serving as mentors, facilitators, and resources. DCTribal is your community and we seek your support and involvement.

You’re invited to bring your ideas to the next DCTribal hafla and town hall meeting on September 26, 2009 at Contradictions Dance Studio, Takoma Park, MD. The town hall meeting will be held between 5:30 and 6:30pm, please come if you would like to offer your talents and skills to DCTribal. The hafla will be from 6:30-8:30pm, and will feature vending, open dancing, and a swap meet.

Come spend time with us and meet your fellow community members!
you would be interested in.

*WHAT IS THE HOOPGIRL® WORKOUT?*
The HoopGirl® Workout is feel-good fitness! Learn to hoop on your torso,
arms, legs, and off body in elaborate arcs, spins and jumps. Hoopdance can
help you feel full of confidence, inner radiance, power and poise. Explore
pleasure as your primary motivation for movement. You learn how to navigate
using feeling instead of sight or thought -- becoming responsive, breathing
deeply, and creating fluid transitions. Special attention is given to
micromovements of the body, working with the downbeat, freeing the head,
unleashing your own style. Guidance for performance given throughout class.
Free yourself in ecstatic undulation, experiment with vocal release, and
express attitude and spunk! Team-building activities build a sense of
community and create laughter. Performance opportunities allow us each to
shine and feel appreciation and joy. A variety of music -- from electronic
house music, R&B to classical and world music will provide a rich tapestry
of sound for your dance.
*What is covered in the HoopGirl® Workout for Beginners?*
No experience neccessary! The extended class time in this series allows for
lots of one-on-one attention and detailed instruction. You will explore
dancing while hooping, with ample time to master moves. Each day is devoted
to increasing awareness in a different part of the body while working with a
specific principle of hoopdance.

*About ME: *Surprise! (aka Katie Desmond) has been spreading her love and
joy of hooping for over six years. A California native, she has wowed
audiences across the United States with her campy, fun and theatrical style
of hoop and fire dance. In 2009, she was nominated for Fire Hooper of the
Year by Hooping.org. Katie is a licensed HoopGirl Level 1 teacher who
believes that she can teach anyone to hoop. Surprise! is available for
performances and private workshops and events. She also designs colorful
custom made hoops.

Fire Dance Choreography Class Description:

Have you been itching to become part of a rehearsing team that produces
clockwork precision and heart wrenching theatrics with fire? If so, I'd like
to draw your attention to a 12 class course Dance Afire is offering
during the fall session with that very goal in mind. At the end of the
course the participants will be crafted into an independent,
performance crew, ready to ply their trade for fun and profit.

Crafting and performing choreo is an entirely different creature than our
normal ecstatic fire play. The first requirement to make such a team come
together is a consistent and comfortable rehearsal space. Next you need a
leader with the vision and patience to herd you burning cats towards that
vision. I have those ingredients in spades. The last and most important
ingredient is your dedication. Mix those three elements and together we will
craft DC's newest fire dance sensation.

All levels welcome, the first and most important requirement is that you own
your fire tools
Kallisti Tribal Inappropriate Hafla! September 12th!

It's all fun and games until someone loses a bindi... That's right! It's time to bare all and do all those dance routines we'd never dare show to the unsuspecting general public!

Saturday, September 12, 2009
1pm to 5pm
131 Brightside Ave, Pikesville, MD 21208.

This is an outdoor event, so plan accordingly. Come a bit early to snag a space with some shade (bring your own chairs/blankets/whatever you need to sit and be comfy). Parasols, sun block, and bug spray recommended. Everyone is encouraged to being food/drinks to share, or at least to take care of yourself. Also, feel free to bring hula hoops, poi, bubbles, or any other fun lawn toys for general hanging out.

NO KIDS ALLOWED!!!!
Though we love the kiddies, this hafla is for adults only. Since some content may not be suitable for children, we are asking that no one under 16 years old attend. Not that we're planning for crazy, full on nekkid (It is Lyra's backyard and she wants to be able to look her neighbors in the eye, haha), we want performers to feel comfortable with doing more risque or racy pieces. So, sorry, but the little ones need to stay at the homestead.

Stay tuned for lineup of performers! For up-to-date info, including inclement weather plans, visit www.kallistitribal.com.

Intensive in Toronto with Rosanna/Cleoflaptra

After a 2 year hiatus from the East Coast, spent training in SF, I'm moving back to the great white north in September. Since its been SOOO long since I've either taught or performed in Toronto and I've done SOOO much since I've been in San Fran, I've decided to pull together an extravaganza eleganza of dance madness. I'm packing in as much as possible into 3 days of teaching, as well as throwing a party with performances by moi, and beats courtesy of 2 of my favourite DJs, Nick McAlister and Gerard Valdez.

Want to know more about my dancing? Please check out my website http://www.cleoflaptra.com

The details of the workshop have been sorted out and the schedule is as follows:

Friday October 23rd (Aurora Live Studios, 392 Queen Street E in Toronto)

See my video from Tribal Fest 2008:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqG-7DNB1No

Sunday October 25th (Mad For Dance 263 Adelaide St. West)
12-2: Funk styles for bellydancers - Funkifying your bellydance and bellydancifying your funk.
We will be going over how to utilize bellydance technique to create illusory effects in popping, contracting different muscle groups to create a hit, breaking down boogaloo rolls in bellydance terminology, and flipping arm waves inside and out. I will also be discussing different dance styles that are commonly performed with popping, and the distinction between popping and locking.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GYUOvjOlvg

230-430: Slow technique and flexibility.
This technique section will focus on drilling SLOOOOOOOWWWWWLLLLLLYYYY. We will also be doing yoga and other excercises to work on balance. We will end with more stretches (expanding on what we did on Friday).

430-5: Questions and wrap up

Cost
$240 (CAD) before Sept 30
$275 (CAD) after Sept 30

Send registration via paypal (fees included in cost above) to blueberrysouffle@hotmail.com Registration will shortly be available via my website. For snail mail registration, contact me for a mailing address. You can also register in person at my classes or events (such as Rachel Brice in Ottawa Oct. 9th).

Half/full day registration will be made available (space permitting) a week or two before the workshop. Class size is limited so register early to guarantee a spot. No refunds, but it is partially or fully transferable (ie. another dancer can take your Friday workshops if you can't make it).

Performance and Partay
Friday October 23rd 9pm till late

Yellow Spiral Notebook Journal

Hola, Tribalistas -

When the repo men came for Kaihea's big white SUV a few months ago, I threw a lot of stuff that was in there in a bag quickly and I just recently got around to processing it. There's a yellow spiral notebook that I think was left over after a DC Tribal workshop around 2006, and it's full of someone's introspections and musings, but the author/owner didn't write her name in it. I've skimmed just enough to ascertain that this is someone who seems to have broken up with a guy named Amir, and who was at least acquainted with someone named Boaz - I figure those names are rare enough that it's sure to trigger some connections out there in The Community.

So hey, if you've got a clue for me, be in touch...I've got a chunk of someone's heart here and I want it to get home safely to its proper owner. I'm a journalhound myself, and every journal I ever lost is a little lasting wound. Help me heal this one.

cheers,

Hi everyone!

It's been over a year since my last solo at Tribal Cafe, and I am ready and excited for this next performance. And I have a special request! Would somebody out there with a camera nicer then my point-&-shoot be willing to take some photos? Also, if someone else would be so kind as to film my performance, I would greatly appreciate it! Hilary has a video camera that I'm sure she can bring...but she will be, uh, unable to film it herself, cause of , uh, special secret reasons....
;)

Yay! See you at DC Tribal Cafe!!

Silkroad Dance Company- Hooray for Bollywood! Saturday June20th

Hooray for Bollywood
by Laurel Victoria Gray

read complete article at
www.bourgeononline.com

On June 20th the Silk Road Dance Company (SRDC) will present my new full-length, Bollywood-themed dance concert at Harmony Hall. The term ”Bollywood” refers to India’s enormous Hindi-language film industry that is located in Bombay (now known as ”Mumbai.”) Although Bollywood choreographies originally drew from Indian classical and folk dance, other genres like jazz, hip hop, and even belly dance have recently entered the mix. Bollywood movies have an innocent optimism, an infectious charm, and an unabashed sense of melodrama that paints the world in bright colors — just like the old Hollywood musicals of the Depression years.

Can anyone make any recommendations for shopping or events 6/18-6/23?

a message for Romka fans and friends....

Dear Friends,

It's with mixed emotions that Romka announces that our workshop and performance at Tribal Fest, and our performance in DC at Tribal Cafe will be our last artistic collaboration as a troupe for the foreseeable future. Our parting is bittersweet as we both take the time to focus on our growing solo careers as teachers and performers.

Belladonna & Mavi will continue to work together to host DCTribal Cafe - the country's longest running Tribal Fusion performance event and Belly Horror, our annual halloween-themed weekend. We both plan on being a part of the DCTribal community, remain open to future collaborations, given the right opportunity. : )

For the past five years, Romka has been lucky enough to travel the country sharing our unique approach to belly dance and sword work. Through our workshops & performances at Tribal Fest, Gothla, Spirit of the Tribes, Elevation, Night of 1,000 goddesses and more we've brought a little bad ass to belly dance. Thank you for all your support, love, and opportunity over the past 5 years, and we look forward to the future!

After May 24, 2009 you can reach us at our personal websites for workshops and performance information:
www.MaviBellyDance.com

Catch our upcoming workshops including - Mavi @ TribOriginal in Oct 2009 and Belladonna at Tribal Alchemy in Oct 2009......
I understand they are an integral part of your style. Could you explain to me what the differences and similarities are between how you all play them and traditional cabaret would? I know it's a basic question, but I'm not versed in Tribal. Help, please?

Religious Reference to Dance and Costume

In the interest of bridging culture, I thought it would be an enlightening exercise to link up some characteristics of bellydance costume and movement with references in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim holy texts. I think it explores the origins of the arts and makes it more accessable to mainstream America. Since I'm still a student of both dance and relion, I am putting the thought out there for everyone to chime in on.

I found two very interesting references in the Bible:

Exodus 28:33 (English Standard Version)
On its hem you shall make pomegranates of blue and purple and scarlet yarns, around its hem, with bells of gold between them,

Yarn pomegranates alternating with bells sound a lot like tribal belts to me. Was that the inspiration for the modern tribal belt? Was this just a coincidence? Was the belt design picked up from observing middle Eastern nomadic culture, which has had the same decoration since Exodus?

and

The LORD also spoke to Moses, saying, "Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue. "It shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the LORD, so as to do them and not follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot, so that you may remember to do all My commandments and be holy to your God. "I am the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt to be your God; I am the LORD your God." (Numbers 15:37-41)

Does PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) consciously use the blue sash as a reference to God or was the color picked for some other reason? I so, maybe God is in the coincidences?

It is interesting discussion points and I was hoping others in the community would know more about both religion and the origin of costume to put more info out there. Thanks.
Looking for group ecstatic dance in Baltimore/DC area

Hi all,

I'm looking for ecstatic or trance dance groups in this area. 5 Rhythms, Barefoot Boogie, Trance dance... that type of thing. Group dance events where the focus is on process and being in the moment rather than performance. Anyone know of anything like this regularly going on around here? Thanks!!

-Pam

P.S. Sorry for the crossposting. I'm casting a wide-ish net.

ATS Duet/Nubian Fusion with Fan Veils Workshops in Columbia, MD - 5/17/09

Meklena's May Madness - Sunday May 17,2009
Full day of workshops - 10AM - 5:30PM

The Two Ssssss…Shimmies and Spins
This 1 ½ hr workshop will focus on two things that seem to have many dancers stumped:

¾ shimmies - both ¾ up and ¾ down. This workshop will help in better understanding how to do the ¾ shimmy while moving/ walking.

Spins and turns – an easy method of learning to spot and to turn without wobbling
and in a control manner. This skill can be used in any form of dancing – not just
Bellydancing.
10AM - 11:30PM
$20 advance/ $25 at door

Flavors of ATS
This 1 ½ hr workshop is a sampler of the movement vocabulary from FCBD ATS –
-the basic movements will be cover along with some of my favorites. American Tribal Style Belly Dance (ATS) is an improv form of belly dance created by FatChanceBellyDance director, Carolena Nericcio. Improv tribal dance is based on the concept of lead and follow. Specific cues allows a group of dancers to dance together without having to follow a specific choreography. The followers watch for cues to know what movement is being called by the leader and provides the ability to bring dancers together in dance. Note: Please bring your zills – it will be used in this class.
11:45AM - 1:15PM
$20 advance/ $25 at door

Nubian Fusion
This workshop will teach the basics of Nubian dance along with ATS
inspired movement vocabulary to allow for improv nubian fusion dance. Fan veil
movements will also be taught - please bring a pair if you have it – it is not needed
to do the workshop but some movements can be done with fan veils and will be
taught.
1:45PM - 3:15PM
$20 advance/ $25 at door

Dueling Duets
This 2 hour workshop focuses on ATS movements that can be used to perform in
a duet. Focus will be on ensuring correct allignment, proper usage of cues, movements when dancing with a partner. Attendees must complete Flavors of ATS to attend this workshop. Zills will be used in this class.
3:30PM -5:30PM
$30 advance/ $35 at door

Full Workshop special – sign up for all 4 workshops for $80 advance / $100 at door

For advance signup (by 4/25/09)/payment - contact Meklena at "tribaldncr@gmail.com"
Paypal pmt accepted as well as checks.

Polish your technique - Tuesday nights at Joy of Motion Atlas

Hey peeps! I know this post is spam-tastic, but... here we go.

Want greater control over your belly dance isolations? Need a little oomph in your dance training?

Come drill with me on Tuesday nights, 7:30-8:30pm at Joy of Motion Atlas! A new rotation of technique drills classes begins next week, April 7th. This is a drop-in class, so no pre-registration is required. And the Atlas studio is even easier to get to with the new H St shuttle, with regular service from the Gallery Place Metro station.

Based on the Suhaila Salimpour format, this weekly class focuses on layering belly dance hip movements over various traveling steps at varying tempos and timings. Each class begins with a vigorous warm-up to improve students' stamina and flexibility, and every class includes glute isolation drills and undulation practice.

This class is for belly dancers of all experience levels and styles. Everyone is welcome!

Every Tuesday night.
7:30pm - 8:30pm
1333 H St, NE, Washington DC
Finger cymbals workshop with Asharah - April 19

Do you feel like you can't play finger cymbals and dance at the same time? This workshop is for you!

The Cymbalist Movement: Integrating Finger Cymbals into Your Dance
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.
April 19, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Finger cymbals are an integral part of American Tribal Style bellydance, and can be a lovely accompaniment to a solo performance. However, many dancers often feel daunted by cymbal playing and have been using them less and less… Finger cymbals aren't scary, and this workshop will help you approach cymbals as an instrument and as a way to enhance your performance. With the right exercises, anyone can play cymbals and dance! Asharah will lead you through an intense warm up, teach drills that layer movements and cymbal playing, introduce common cymbal patterns found in Middle Eastern music, and teach a short dance combination focusing on the playing of your cymbals with the music and your movements.

$65 Online Registration | $75 At Door

3260 Wilson Blvd.

Today is the last day to get presale tickets for Mischief (presale closes tonight at 10pm). If you don't get em' we'll still have tickets at the door but you can save $5.
$20 at the door

Still on the fence about coming? Here is one of MANY reasons you want to be there on Friday night....

Archedream for Humankind will be performing a full 2 h set of music, dancers, video, intelligent lighting, and more. They are bringing out their huge hexagonal partitioned screen, video (with their own VJ), intelligent lightning, Glenn on the decks putting downs mind-melting electro, and stage performers.

Check out this video of Archedream: http://www.parkerism.com/dj_project.html

And several other reasons:

- The Crucible is a fantastic space for a Burner party (we are taking it over). They have multiple rooms and "zones" for dancing, spinning LED toys, Juggling, chilling, and all general forms of mischief. BTW, No membership is necessary and you can bring any toys you would like to create Mischief.

- Steampunk fashion show featuring designs from both New York designer Sefirah Fierce and the Delicious Boutique and Corseterie (Philadelphia). This is a chance to see some of the best Steampunk fashion anywhere! We are honored to have them come out and support this event. Also, they will have items on hand to vend.

- Dance Afire will be performing at intervals throughout the night.

- Parkour demonstration featuring one of the U.S. masters (and DC local). Watch these guys defy gravity bouncing off walls and obstacles!

- Dungeon space run by PDF theme camp Pound on Playa! In the spirit of The Crucible we'll make sure the spankings continue regardless if the moral is improving or not.

- Dj's from DC and Baltimore in two rooms:

Theme/Dress Inspiration: Burner Fabulous, of course! The theme is Unearthly/Other-worldly. Always fabulous, never constrained. From Steampunks to spacepunks, Kings and Quens of Fire and ice, Devils and Angels of Leather and Fur. Have fun! Be Mischevious.

Full Bar (cash/credit card) provided by The Crucible

This is a party to benefit the Playa Del Fuego stage sound system (and future DC Burner events).

The Crucible: 1816 Half Street SW, Washington DC (near the ball park, plenty of free parking)
There are no signs that say "The Crucible" and there is a club next door so make sure you go to the correct party. We will provide something outside to let you know where to go.

Mischief - Friday, April 17th in DC

Just under one week left until Mischief - A Pageant of Unearthly Delights (Friday April 17th) and it's time to begin scheming and plotting. Do you have your costume in order? Bag O' tricks? Got your LED poi, staves, hoops, and objects?

We have a great DC location, amazing performances/music, and the BEST crowd of party-people on the East Cost: You!

Reasons to be excited:

- The Crucible is a fantastic space for a Burner party (we are taking it over). They have multiple rooms and "zones" for dancing, spinning LED toys, Juggling, chilling, and all general forms of mischief. BTW, No membership is necessary and you can bring any toys you would like to create Mischief.

- Archedream for Humankind is brining out their large Hexagonal screens and putting on a 2 hour performance of visuals, dancers, intelligent lighting, and booty-grooving electro beats. This is a very special treat for us!

- Dance Afire will be performing at intervals throughout the night.

- Dj's from DC and Baltimore in two rooms: Haaps, Sequoia, Zee Roe, Sir-Lix-a-lot, Phil Schaefer, Melo, Sesso, and Dj Inbetween.

MIschief is through-and-through a Burner event but we have passed the word out to other open-minded communities and expect a diverse (but Burner heavy) crowd. That also means Mischief may sell out, so make sure to get your tickets pre-sale; it saves you $5, makes entrance quick and easy, and ensures you a chance to make some mischief. Presale closes Thursday evening (April 16th).

April 11 - Two workshops with Tempest

MeaHuna Productions is bringing Tempest, the “Gothmutha”, to Washington, DC, on April 11th! She’ll be teaching two workshops on finding your inner voice and developing a strong stage presence. I can personally attest to Tempest's unique and insightful approach to being not only a performer but also an artist on stage. I'm really looking forward to learning her approaches to bringing art to life through dance... if you're a performing dancer, particularly if you're blending theater into your dance, you don't want to miss this!

Tempest is the woman who made gothic bellydance a worldwide phenomenon. She developed the original Gothic Bellydance Resource online, and she is an inspiration for myriad dancers around the world (including myself).

Workshops will be followed by a ritual dance dedication by Tempest celebrating friend, dancer, and artist Kaihea at the Palace of Wonders.

Registration and workshop descriptions at http://meahunaproductions.com/?page_id=12

Class Description:

Our performance piece will weave together a powerful story that is fun, fast and refreshingly furious! Master the exciting and explosive movements of West African dance by drilling digestible steps. Learn theatrical expression, projection for stage and discover your own artistic dance voice. Students will find inner strength to shine and roar! Bring water and a sense of adventure (90 minute class).
Prerequisite - 1 year of previous belly dance experience minimum - 18 months prior belly dance experience recommended.

Family & Friends of Kaihea are honored to announce a call for performers for the 3rd Fire in the Belly. The event, held in honor of Kaihea's birthday will raise funds for DCTribal & Cancer Charities, to help fight the terrible disease that took our beloved Kaihea from us entirely too early. Show length and alloted performance times will depend on the measure of response, but we're truly interested in trying to create space for anyone that wishes to donate a performance in honor Kaihea.

Show details:

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Palace has a small 10 X 10 stage, can accommodate fire performances for professional-level performers with insurance. The show is open to anyone, with any kind of act, who'd like a dedicate a performance to Kaihea's memory and help support the continuation of her vision of DCTribal as well as help stop this horrible disease.

If you're interested in being a part of the show, please email Mavi@RomkaDance.com SUBJECT LINE: FIRE IN THE BELLY with the following information!

Daveed's latest adventure

Time for a new adventure. Like all of my past ones there will be drumming, teaching, learning and meeting incredibly talented and creative people. I'm off for Israel in May for two-weeks.

I work for Port Discovery Children's Museum, located in the heart of Baltimore's Inner Harbor district. Since last fall, I have been working with two classes of fourth graders: one is located in Columbia MD and the other is in the Central Arava region of south-central Israel. They have been collaborating together as part of a story-creating, storyboarding and storytelling project that builds on descriptive & narrative writing exercises that targets their visual interpretation skills. Just another way of integrating the arts to teach core classroom curriculum.

No trip would be complete without a heavy dose of drumming. I'm taking one drum: a 20" Cooperman bodhran. It has been a regular travel companion of mine for the past several years. The TKL backpack case is quite superb. My only reservation has to do with whether it will fit in the overhead compartment. I'm flying EL AL out of JFK. Their fleet standard for the flight to Tel Aviv is a 747-400. Don't know much about that plane, but I will find out.

While there I will be working with the 4th graders on how to perform Kamishibai, which is a traditional Japanese storytelling art form that dates to 12th century monks. I refer to it as PowerPoint 11 A.D. So as not to miss out on an opportunity when drumming I am planning on taking a hand-held Digital Recorder. Does anyone have any suggestions? The one that I am looking at is the M-Audio Micro Track II Portable Digital Recorder.

My ideas are evolving exponentially. I get to have my own "Willy Wonka" moments, too. This is fun!!! If I can figure out all of the details of blogging, posting pics and video, podcasting, etc, I will share some of my trip with you all, if anyone is interested.

If anyone wishes to be included in my adventure, please email me directly at kamishibai.project@gmail.com. I'll be leading a Kamishibai storytelling workshop for all of the participating Israeli students and teachers, plus visiting the Israel Children's Museum in Holon, as well as Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. If you have friends and contacts (musicians, dancers, artists, etc) in Israel and would be willing to make introductions I would be grateful and ask that you write me directly.

Thanks for your kind attention. From time to time, I have to go somewhere that I have never been and speak music with people whose spoken tongue I do not understand. However, I am very comfortable speaking the language of rhythm and melody. It's often times much easier to express myself speaking that language than English.

Well, that's enough for now....

Shalom...Daveed

The 2nd Burner Bazaar -MARCH 7TH

* Original Message from Tequila Sean *

Hello everyone, The 2nd Burner Bazaar will be on MARCH 7TH, THIS TIME
IT WILL START AT 7PM.
The idea behind this is to provide a place for people who make stuff
or have stuff to sell a place to display their wares. Also, to provide
a place for a community garage sale, all the stuff that you have that
while you don't have a use for it someone else might. And, to provide
a place for people to have stuff deconstructed and/or fabricated
and/or to learn how to do it themselves. I want this to be costuming
resource, matching people with needs with people with skills and/or
stuff, a arts and crafts resource, and a green products resource. An
event the encourages the reusing of stuff and things. For the 2nd
bazaar, we are asking for a $10 tabling fee OR 10% OF YOUR TAKE
WHICHEVER IS GREATER if you want to display your wares or offer a
service or a workshop for a fee. If you want to offer a free workshop,
there will be no charge to table. It will be free to general public,
to anyone who simply wants to attend. Ultimately, we would like this
to become a revenue stream to help support the studio and to be
profitable for everyone involved. Another hope and goal that I have
for this event, is that it will help to start the sourcing of
Steampunk clothing and fashion in the DC area. I am especially
interested in this, so depending on how things go we might be able to
help fund something. TO ENCOURAGE THIS WE ARE LOOKING TO HAVE A
STEAMPUNK FASHION SHOW AT THE 3RD BURNER BAZAAR WITH IS SET FOR
SATURDAY, APRIL 11TH. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN THE
FASHION SHOW PLEASE LET ME KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO THAT WE CAN
START PUTTING TOGETHER THE SHOW. To give you an idea, some of the
stuff that I will be selling there are: solar christmas lights, glow
poi, staffs, handmade patchwork wrap skirts from The Mayan Connection,
some men's clothing from the Edun collection and some other super
cool solar gadgets. I may also be hitting some of the local thrift
stores for stuff that other people simply must have.AND, THIS TIME WE
WILL HAVE SOME VEGAN CUPCAKES AND RAW FOOD OFFERINGS FROM TWO OF OUR
NEWER LADY BURNERS. Some of the vendors that we had last time included
a professional artist selling prints and offered portraits on site,
another sold professional photographs and others sold costumes and
costuming related stuff and yet another garage style type stuff.
Please let me know if you are interested in tabling or offering a
workshop or service as soon as possible so that we can make sure to
have enough tables. Bring on the sewing machines and surgers and seem
rippers and lets create some funky, fun stuff. We will have a DJ
playing some chill tunes and refreshments will be available. Speaking
of which if you want table/sell any food items, bring them on too, as
I am sure we will work up quite an appetite with all the creative
energy being spent. So, please let me know if you are interested in
tabling as soon as possible because we have a limited number of tables
and I need to know if I need to get more and how many. Also, please
let me know if you are simply interested in attending so that we can
gauge interest in this idea and prepare adequately for the number of
people who want to attend. Event deets: Burner Bazaar Contradiction
Dance Studio 7014 Westmoreland Ave, ste A Takoma Park, MD 20912
office: 240.450.2420 web: _www.contradictiondance.com_ Saturday,
March 7th 7 - 10 pm The 3rd Burner Bazaar will be on Saturday, April
11th and will feature a Steampunk fashion show. Our first full day
bazaar will be on June 16th from 10-6 with the possibility of a few
more in between. Cheers, -Tequila/Sean sgee@dcaccess.net 202-420-9006

At long last--a beginner poi workshop!

* Original post by Drex *

All-

It's been a very long time since we've had a beginner workshop and we know a
lot of you guys have been clamoring for it. We've gotten through our last
round of intermediate poi classes and now we've got a free week that we can
throw to you guys just getting started!

This Thursday from 8:30-10 PM, I'll be teaching an Introduction to Poi
workshop at Contradiction Dance (http://www.contradictiondance.com) at 7014
Westmoreland Ave in Takoma Park, MD. Here, we'll go over basics of poi, from
proper plane control to the four basic combinations of poi movement that
literally all tricks are extrapolated from. Poi has been evolving fast in
the past year, so I have every intention of throwing in a couple things that
will prepare you guys for the more exotic tricks that are making a splash in
the object manipulation world right now.

Sign up in advance to get the workshop for $15 or drop-ins are $18. Thanks
for your patience, all, and I'll see you tomorrow night!
