MIDNIGHT, May 10--bellydancers, TBM CD promo, 3 DJs, 2 vendors, free cake...

Midnight's always a little bit like Las Vegas--with great shows,
music, drinks, complimentary food options, and a weekly drawing that
gives everyone who enters a chance to go home a winner.

This Saturday is a perfect example. We've booked not one but two
exotic bellydancing acts (Serpens, Shaell) that we know you won't be
able to resist. Combine them with a CD release party for The
Birthday Massacre, three hot DJs (Phae, DuJour, Gleek), two
impressive vendors (radio-active- music.com, Maile Man), and all the
usual extras, all for just a $5.00 cover, and we bet you can't find
any better deal--especially given our admission and drink discounts--
in D.C. for sure!

BELLYDANCERS!

Our headline act this Saturday is Serpens; and, as some of you may
already suspect given the name, they not only perform the ancient
Eastern art but do so accompanied by live snakes!

Serpens is a relatively new group, but both of its members have
studied bellydancing for many years. Urvashi is well known in
Washington bellydancing circles, currently a leader of the troupe
Gypsy Hips. Farasha, a licensed veterinary technician by day, also
performs with the group Rhythm and Cues. Dancing together with their
pair of boas, they'll leave you amazed and begging for more.

Opening for Serpens will be Shaell, a Midnight regular much admired
in the local gothic scene for her dance floor moves and stylish dress.

Serpens will be filming this appearance, and you can take pictures as
well. However, in order to guarantee the safety of the snakes (and
our attendees), and to keep The Meeting Place's insurers happy, we've
imposed a strict "no interaction" policy. Only Serpens members and
their assistants will be able to hold or touch the snakes, and close-
up shots will be prohibited. Bring your zoon lens.

This is going to be a "don't miss" show for sure!..."

What a great time! And can I say, I officially LOVE Palace of Wonders!! I want my house to look like that :) Priscilla, the General Manager, is absolutely adorable and such a down to earth, genuine gal :) The pizza and nachos were faaabulous and my Serpentina Orangina came adorned with is own little rubber snakie. I thought about dancing with it, but it was too shy.. :D

The stage is quite intimidating in its petitness but everyone owned it fantastically... well, I did have a wee bit of a run in with one particular brick and my sword, but now I can say I've offically left my mark.. ha! :)

I hope there are some photos out there from last night, cuz my schweetie was filming and coudn't take any.. anyone got any!?? I'd love to see ! :)

The video did not turn out very good. We had it setup for spotlight due to the BRIGHT lighting condition that was initially on so needless to say.. you can see the occasional head and arms of an otherwise invisible Urvashi.. bummer. I really wanted to see how I did cuz I was soooo nervous and unworthy feeling being amongst such FABULOUS dancers!

I also have to mention the sound tech was .. well, a little disappointing. The main sound person could not make it so someone filled in. I am very thankful that we had someone but I really wish (and this is a consensus opinion from most if not all of us performing last night) that she would have kept the music kranked and left it there. The music was entirely too low and though we would motion for it to be turned up, there was delay in getting it turned up, and then it would get turned back down again. what the h e double hockey sticks! it was so distracting as the performer and for the audience and very frustrating.

But that set aside, the performances were fantastic. I loved the variety of talents ranging from tribal to cab to fusion. One big happy belly dance community.. because it is all belly dance and we all share the passion of it :)

Opening the show with Sammati!

Eugenia and Jen rocked it with ATS! Big skirts on a tiny stage whirling together were stunning and the energy was contageous! They were truly representing and would do Carolena proud!

Katrina was beautiful and flawless with her Oriental set of Veil to drum solo in her sparkling green and gold (THANK YOU so much for letting me use your Sugar Plum Eye Candy!! it RAWKED!)

Asharah - well, what can I say that I haven't said before, kicked major ARSE! She always leaves me breathless with chills

then a wee bit o intermission...

Mayyadah and her magical shamadan performance. Wow. Whats more to like than balancing something on your head that is 2 ft tall, and is on fire? not much I say! :)

Then it was my turn... egads! I was so nervous. I opened with Mahtab:Moonlight Mix Pt 4 using black isis Wings, then Djinn:Brooklyn Baladi with sword, and ended with Evanescence:Lacrymosa. As I said, the petit stage was rather intimidating. I tend to travel alot when I dance and .. well, there wasn't alot to travel so I found myself circling the stage alot like a trapped wild jaguar .. ha!! :)

and closing the show was:
Samira. Double WOW. With her (as we discussed backstage) Tim Burton, Pirate, 50s Sailor Girl cabaret costume wich was gorgeous! Black and white stripes with beautiful large rhinestone adornments.. she is just an absolute treat to watch. Her skills are maddening, her zilling is perfection, and her personality and audience interaction is astonishing. I absolutely adore her.

The show went from about 9:45 till... almost 11 I believe. Jen did awesomely as our MC of the evening and girl, I dont know how you were able to get up there right after your ATS set to MC and not pass out! I bow to you. :)

Thank you Jen for creating this event and for a fabulous experience in my first professional solo show. I look forward to the opportunity to do it again! ;)

American Tribal Style Belly Dance (ATS) is an improv form of belly dance created by FatChanceBellyDance director, Carolena Nericcio. Improv tribal dance is based on the concept of lead and follow. Specific cues allows a group of dancers to dance together without having to follow a specific choreography. The followers watch for cues to know what movement is being called by the leader and provides the ability to bring dancers together in dance. This movement vocabulary is known across the country and other parts of the world. Dancers who know ATS can dance with other ATS dancers without ever having dance together before.
With her extensive knowledge and experience in international dance styles, Ave Fleming brings a truly unique and modern approach to the belly dance community.L ocated in Phoenix, Arizona, her teaching and performances throughout the Southwestern region have created quite a demand for her practice of Raks Sharqi. Her focus on isolations and music interpretation has captivated audiences here in the U.S. and abroad. As the director, choreographer, and creator of the Black Opal Dance Company, audiences have had the opportunity to see her creative dance style amplified by ten. Ava's 2004 Belly Dancer of

Kami Liddle:

Kami performs both as a solo artist and also collaborates wh iotther dancers. She is a guest artist for The Indigo, directed by Rachel Brice, and has also worked with Samatha Riggs of Boom Boom Bollywood on choreography and periodically performs with the company.

Hi everyone!

So I'm extremely excited because the decision has pretty much been made that I'm moving back to DC in September.
Though a DC native I moved to Canada for years ago and it's not til I got here that I started belly dancing (traditional middle eastern for 1 year and ATS for 2 years). As devastated as I am to be leaving my tribe here, I'm soo pumped to see the amounts of tribal there is in DC (which is about one hundred times more than where I currently am).

Sooo, my question is where do I start? Who I go to? Where can I pick up on lessons again? (I'll be in the Georgetown area)... I want to connect with a tribe down there because like I said, it makes me really sad to be leaving the one I have here. I don't want to lose that community feeling but want to recreate it elsewhere with new wonderful people :)

Also, what's protocol for finding a tribe/a person to really apply yourself with? I really want to bring the time I dedicate to dancing up a notch. I want to find someone/several someones I can really learn from and who I can share what I know with. Hints? Help?

In promoting the upcoming DCTribal Hafla to some of the musician groups I subscribe to, someone asked why I wanted musicians to play. I have known the joy of dancing to live music, but a lot of the younger dancers in the area have not.

I want to take a survey and see what you (all) think.

1. Have you ever danced to live music?
1b. what did you like about it?
1c. what did you not like about it?

2. if you had the chance, would you like to dance to live music?

3. why don't you dance to more live music?

take a minute and fill out the survey. I will then direct the musicians to this post so they can see that we ~want~ them to play :-)

Hi All! Just a reminder to folks interested in learning more traditional Turkish Rom steps, gestures and combinations.
I'm teaching an 8-week series at Glen Echo Park in Maryland on Monday nights 7:30pm - 8:30pm starting on March 31.
We will be focusing more on Rom folkloric/social dancing elements which can also be included in your Tribal/Oriental dance. We will be exploring the Romani 9/8 rhythm based on what I"ve been studying with Reyhan, so hopefully it will be new to some of you, viewing video footage of actual Romani men & women dancing (in one class), and I may teach a few new steps I've learned from Turkish folkdancers as well.
Last class is Monday after Herdeljezi Festival, so we will be able to review some of what is taught at the festival...
There is a MINIMUM of 5 people needed for the class to run. So far, 3 are signed up. Don't wait too late to sign up!
To register: www.glenechopark.org
Click on "Classes & Workshops" and "Spring Schedule 2008". Turkish Rom is listed under "Folk". It's $120 for 8 weeks. A steal of a deal!
Thanks!
An articulate workshop designed to enhance the poise and fluidity of the taxeem, with an emphasis on arms and hands, introducing dancers to movement vocabulary beyond the “Tribal Frame” as well as polishing transitions. We will address such issues as timing, musical and personal interpretation, illusions of the boneless dancer, and sensual vs sexual.
Hot and Spicy (April 12, 2008 - 1:00 to 3:00pm):
An exhilarating and inspirational workshop, designed to be accessible to all levels, with a playful array of drills, combos and hot new moves.
Shems (www.shemsdance.com) – An artist in every sense of the word, Shems has trained obsessively for eleven years in a variety of Middle Eastern dances as well as an array of classical, modern and cultural dance forms. In addition to her training with renowned dancers, Shems has an extensive performance background. She will guide you in dancing to an exciting “Drum Solo.” Using a drum solo choreography as a framework, this class will teach you guidelines and techniques for selecting and creating your own strong drum solo that builds in dynamic energy and shows off your range.

Shukufeh (www.TirazDanceNetwork.com) - In addition to instructing and performing, Shukufeh has 20 years experience in the beauty industry and has hosted a beauty segment on a national TV program. Shukufeh will help you in “Creating Visual Drama Through Makeup and Costuming.” Take your performance beyond choreography. Learn to build visual drama and character development through makeup, hair and costuming techniques. Explore concepts to help you choose flattering color, style and beauty enhancements that build your confidence and professional presentation. Participants who need advice about costumes, hair pieces, and makeup they already own, are invited to bring them to the workshop.

Miramar (aleena.com/miramar) – A published author and seasoned instructor, Miramar has been studying and researching Middle Eastern Dance for approximately twenty years. She has performed in over 1000 venues including numerous restaurant appearances throughout Virginia, First Night events and several television programs. Miramar teaches an exciting folkloric dance: “Introduction to Hagallah.” The Hagallah, a Bedouin wedding dance, originates from the Mugharba (Western Arabs) of the Mersa Matrouh province of Egypt. Numerous Egyptian dance stars and folklore troupes have evolved the Bedouin dance into a stage version. Miramar includes a break-down of the wonderful oscillating shimmy!
Taxeem (April 12, 2008 - 9:45 to 11:45am):
An articulate workshop designed to enhance the poise and fluidity of the taxeem, with an emphasis on arms and hands, introducing dancers to movement vocabulary beyond the “Tribal Frame” as well as polishing transitions. We will address such issues as timing, musical and personal interpretation, illusions of the boneless dancer, and sensual vs sexual.

Hot and Spicy (April 12, 2008 - 1:00 to 3:00pm):
An exhilarating and inspirational workshop, designed to be accessible to all levels, with a playful array of drills, combos and hot new moves. Through a series of technical drills and improvised combos students will engage in such topics as dynamic phrasing, musicality, personal expression and the art of creating your own combos.

The Art of Professional Performance (April 13, 2008 - 12:00 to 2:00pm):
This innovative workshop is open to dancers of all levels and backgrounds. After hours of preparation in classes, practice in front of the mirror, and rehearsal, how are you presenting yourself as a professional performer? This workshop offers the tools both practical and theoretical to break into or enhance your professional appearance. It will provide insight into job seeking, costuming, make-up tips, promotional packages, as well as explore the illusive notions of stage presence, charisma, "handling" the audience and much more. This workshop is tailored to the participants present. Bring any promotional material you have on yourself, dance photos, your make-up, a costume you are working on, and dress in comfortable clothing.

__________________________

Greetings! The start of a new year is always an interesting time. I find myself looking back at the previous year, trying to find a way to sum up what the year meant in terms of good times and life lessons. I look back at 2007 and see a year full of great change.
This last summer was an amazing experience: being able to tour the world and teach my format. Montreal, Paris, Italy, Egypt, Korea, and Taiwan got glute squeezing, and I was blown away at how open everyone was to another idea of technique and movement. I look forward to going back and establishing the certification program. When Isabella returned to school, her “summer sharing” on the first day was very different, to say the least. I’m so lucky she was by my side for the tour. She not only assisted me in all my workshops, but she soloed during each performance and brought the house down. Now she is teaching her first workshop (alone), “Belly Dance for Kids”, at Summer Caravan this June in New Jersey. She can’t wait.

Suhaila Productions' original plans were to open another dance studio in Las Vegas, where my family and I would have an additional home to the one we have in the Bay Area; those plans have now changed. I am divorcing, and Isabella and I live full-time in the Bay Area. Change of this magnitude is very difficult on the family, and Isabella and I have greatly appreciate all of the well wishing and support we have received from friends in and out of the belly dance community. I also appreciated your understanding for privacy as well. Thank you!

Now, at the start of this New Year, I look forward and feel positive and full of energy. I see great and creative things for 2008. We have a full year of workshops organized, new products planned, and creative ideas in the making. As always, I'm excited to work with all of my students - to see their efforts blossom into growth and creativity. I am especially excited about the start of the Jamila Salimpour’s Traditional Tribal weeklong workshop and certification program -- finally! We are also going to have a “Choreography Collective” weeklong workshop the last week of June with guest teachers that will expose participants to many different styles: Tribal Fusion, 40’s style Cabaret, Modern Cabaret, and Traditional Tribal to name a few. I am also excited to say that in February I will be holding my first level 3 test.

We are finalizing the last touches on a new percussion album to be released in March as well as a single release of “Dark Veil”, an exciting and edgy song that is a rock and Middle Eastern fusion. The Suhaila Dance Company performed to it in 2006!

Please visit my new shopping cart at www.smartcart.com/Suhaila! We are offering many new pants as well as great deals on the product line. Also, check out my new website at www.TheRealSuhaila.com, and my new contact email, Suhaila@TheRealSuhaila.com.

Due to a technical problem, we are having to rebuild our email list. Please forward this newsletter to your friends, family and students and encourage them to sign up. I appreciate your support. I'm excited about the great opportunities that 2008 will offer for all of us.

Wishing you all a wonderful 2008!
