Why Live Music? - discuss

topic posted Thu, March 6, 2008 - 11:45 AM by  Mab
Hi folks!

In promoting the upcoming DCTribal Hafla to some of the musician groups I subscribe to, someone asked why I wanted musicians to play. I have known the joy of dancing to live music, but a lot of the younger dancers in the area have not.

I want to take a survey and see what you (all) think.

1. Have you ever danced to live music?
1b. what did you like about it?
1c. what did you not like about it?

2. if you had the chance, would you like to dance to live music?

3. why don't you dance to more live music?

take a minute and fill out the survey. I will then direct the musicians to this post so they can see that we ~want~ them to play :-)
let them feel some love!

    1. Have you ever danced to live music?
    yes
1b. what did you like about it?
Its way more exciting than dancing to a cd. Having a band or drummer behind or beside you plus the audience in front of you
creates a circle of creative energy around the dancer.
1c. what did you not like about it?
I feel bad about having my butt to the band for most of the performance.
    2. if you had the chance, would you like to dance to live music?
    absolutely
    3. why don't you dance to more live music?
Schedules don't always mesh, but I try to dance to live music every chance I get

1a) I started out with almost nothing but live music.
1b) It was music! It wasn't canned, it floowed longer or shorter depending on what was going on. I like the flexibility. I also like to not have to worry about speakers or sound systems. Invisible minstrels are cute but I prefer the real thing.
1c) Not very portable. You can't just pick up the band and move them around but it's a small price to pay.

    2) I would greedily dance to live music any chance I could get.

    3) There isn't any.

    1. Have you ever danced to live music?
    Yes! All the time.

1b. what did you like about it?
It's live - there's always an element of surprise and exchange, and what's happening on stage is that much more complex and exciting as a result. Plus, I just love the hell out of our local musicians. They are fun to have on stage.

1c. what did you not like about it?
Most bands can't play an infinite variety of songs on an infinite variety of instruments. So you have some constraints with live music that you wouldn't have with recorded music - for instance, To the Earth's band has yet to bust out any bhangra. The average Pennsic drum circle of novice drummers that know 3-4 rhythms can get a little repetitive, too. ;)

    2. if you had the chance, would you like to dance to live music?
    Of course.

    3. why don't you dance to more live music?
Because it's physically impossible for us to dance to any more live music? We have the luxury of doing the vast majority of our shows with musicians. I'd love to dance to a wider variety of live music & know even more awesome musicians.
