Where to start in DC?

topic posted Mon, March 24, 2008 - 10:51 AM by  Chantal
Hi everyone!

So I'm extremely excited because the decision has pretty much been made that I'm moving back to DC in September.
Though a DC native I moved to Canada for years ago and it's not til I got here that I started belly dancing (traditional middle eastern for 1 year and ATS for 2 years). As devastated as I am to be leaving my tribe here, I'm soo pumped to see the amounts of tribal there is in DC (which is about one hundred times more than where I currently am).

Sooo, my question is where do I start? Who I go to? Where can I pick up on lessons again? (I'll be in the Georgetown area)... I want to connect with a tribe down there because like I said, it makes me really sad to be leaving the one I have here. I don't want to lose that community feeling but want to recreate it elsewhere with new wonderful people :)

Also, what's protocol for finding a tribe/a person to really apply yourself with? I really want to bring the time I dedicate to dancing up a notch. I want to find someone/several someones I can really learn from and who I can share what I know with. Hints? Help?

    Hey Chantal,
    Welcome (back) to the area!
There is a strong tribal community in the area with both ATS and tribal fusion varieties. Like any large community there is a wide variety of teachers and schools with vastly differing experience. I personally recommend going with teachers/schools who encourage you to take at several places. There are a couple places that prefer to create their own circles instead of taking part in the community on a larger scale.
These website all offer up listings of local instructors so you can scope 'em out on your own. :)

      Hi Chantal,

I agree with Samira that our bellydance community here in DC is large and diverse. I think we're really lucky in that respect. I also think that you should shop around and take classes with different teachers. Most teachers will let you take a sample class and that's important because you don't want to plunk down a ton of money and then find out that you don't even like your new teachers' style. Like Samira, I'm also weary of some of these teachers in the community who discourage you from taking classes elsewhere. I've even heard stories of students being "made fun of" in class for taking classes elsewhere. Who needs that kind of drama, really?

I can tell you who I've take with locally and really liked:
Laurel Gray at Joy of Motion
      Artemis at her home studio
      Rachel Brookmire at Sahara Dance
      Saphira at Saffron Dance
Nadira Nasreen at her home studio
      Lotus Niraja (workshops)
      Faten Salama

There are lots of other wonderful teachers in the area that hopefully people will chime in and endorse. But those above are the ones I've taken with and feel comfortable recommending to someone else.

Welcome to the community! Hope to see you around.

Well, if you're interested in tribal, a big tribal resource is www.dctribal.com

Some tribal teachers in the area include Asharah, Belladonna, Marta, Jen of Sammati, Alexis, and a number of teachers at Sahara Dance. There are also a lot of workshops and haflas in the area. I'm probably even forgetting some people! Try:

There are also many wonderful Egyptian, American cabaret, and Turkish style teachers in the area. I mainly listed tribal teachers because that's what your post seemed to be looking for...but gosh...sooooooooooooo much belly dance here. :) I'd say go to a bunch of classes with different teachers, find teachers you resonate with, and learn as much as you can...
